I enjoy writing song lyrics. Over the past few weeks I've written 4 new songs. I just got done recording one of them, a song I wrote for my nephew's ministry organization, Do Life Ministries. As I sit here thinking about that song, I started wondering what it would be like to write a song to God ... a love song to God. After all ... I do love him. More than anything or anyone else ... right? Do I really have to answer that? Do I have to tell the truth? I believe in my heart of hearts I do. Unfortunately no one else sees my heart of hearts but me.
"But Joe, I sing the songs on Sunday ... I tithe to my church ... I even volunteer in the children's ministry. I love God!"
I bet you do, and that's great. I do all of that too (except the children's part ... nope ... not me), but guess what ... anyone can do that. It's what you do the other 166 hours of the week that's important. That's when you make a difference. That's when you show the world how much you love God ... that's when you write your song.
I'm not sure how yours would sound. At times I feel mine would go something like this ...
I love you Lord, with all I am
Except when I'm feeling week and vulnerable, then I start leaning on the natural things in life instead of the supernatural being who created them ... and me.
God you are my rock, my fortress, my deliverer
Except when I don't run to you and ask you for help and try to fix things on my own.
There is no one like you
Except for friends and family, that are much easier to lean on and run to and cry to because they give me instant feedback ... words I can hear, and a hug I can feel.
You are the air I breathe
Except when I'm choking and gasping because I've tried to run my race by myself so often ... I'm worn out.
You are an awesome God, the enemy has been defeated
Except when I empower him by ignoring you and doing things my way instead of your way.
I find comfort in the shadow of your wing
Except when I look for comfort in earthly things ... or places ... or people.
Doesn't sound like a top 40 hit song does it? Heck ... I couldn't even get it to rhyme. Guess it's time I change my tune.
God bless you.
